Funding efficiency and sustainability with Wyke Farms

"My grandparents used to say that if you look after nature, it will look after you. By digesting all of our farm manure, dairy waste and waste from local food businesses, we are able to produce all of our own energy and even supply gas to some of our national retail customers, as well as our cheese. Barclays understood that this long-term commitment to looking after the environment has helped us to become a more efficient business and also supports our journey to become a market leader not only in the UK, but in our export countries too."

Richard Clothier, MD, Wyke Farms Ltd

Wyke Farms Limited is a 150 year old, family owned food manufacturer. The family has three farms as well as supporting over 110 local milk suppliers. Primarily producing Cheddar cheese as well as by-products such as butter and milk, the company is the only independent cheese maker amongst the top 10 UK cheese brands and produces over 13,000 tonnes of award-winning cheddar per year, selling in over 160 countries.

  • Wyke Farms was looking to further strengthen its renewable agenda over the long term and boost green productivity with a brand new biogas plant, which uses microbes to break down particles of waste
  • The plant required financing for its multi-stage production to move into its next phase of operation which will provide surplus renewable energy to the national grid
  • Barclays refinanced Wyke’s facilities in January 2017, providing a full refinancing of the original 2013 funding, plus an additional £4m to enable phase III of the biogas plant to proceed
  • The plant can already accommodate all of Wyke’s needs at only 65% capacity. This means that the plant will contribute to the national grid when operating at full capacity, creating shared value and providing sustainable, renewable energy.
