eSigner 4.2

About eSigner 4.2 for Windows & MAC

eSigner 4.2 is the latest version of the eSigner software introduced in September 2012.

It is compatible with Windows 7 (32 & 64 BIT), MAC and a number of browsers. For further information see the BIB Hardware Requirements*.

The installation route will automatically install the appropriate version of the software. i.e. the 32 BIT version for supported 32 BIT versions of Windows or the 64 BIT version for supported 64 BIT versions of Windows.

When you insert the eSigner 4.2 CD it should automatically start the installation process, if not double clicking on the setup.exe will begin the installation process.

eSigner 4.2 consists of 2 programs, Classic Client 6 (formally called Gemsafe libraries) and eSigner 4.2 Corp and three separate registry entries, classicclent.reg, config.reg and trusted.reg.

For more information on Trusted Sites see the section below.

Installing the Software

Previously installed version of eSigner
The installation process will search for any existing copies of Classic Client or Gemsafe libraries and if present, will uninstall them. Your PC will then be rebooted and any existing versions of eSigner removed. This uninstall process can take several minutes. The installation process will then install Classic Client, followed by eSigner and then request a reboot.

No Existing version of eSigner
The installation process will still search for any existing copies of Classic Client or Gemsafe libraries, but as these do not exist it will move swiftly on to installing Classic Client, followed by eSigner and then request a reboot.

Installing the software manually
The set.exe file initiates the individual set up programs of Classic Client and eSigner and the three separate registry settings.

Before you can install the software manually you must first ensure that there are no existing versions of eSigner, Classic Client or Gemsafe libraries present on the PC. If there are, these must be removed via Add/Remove Programs and the PC rebooted as requested.

How to install the software manually

  • click on either classic_client_32.msi to start a support Windows 32 BIT installation or  classic_client_64.msi to start a supported Windows 64 BIT installation and follow the on screen prompts
  • After installing Classic Client, click on eSignerV4_CORP.msi and follow the on screen prompts, but do not reboot the PC when requested
  • Click on trusted.reg, accepting the request to add the entry to the registry and then reboot the PC.

Known Installation Issues

Where a user has an exiting version of Classic Client or Gemsafe libraries present on their PC certain anti virus programs e.g. Kaspersky will not allow the install program to continue following the reboot after Classic Client or Gemsafe libraries have been uninstalled.

If this happens you should check, via Add/Remove Programs, that Classic Client and Gemsafe libraries have been uninstalled, after which you should uninstall eSigner via Add/Remove Programs.

Once you have removed Classic Client and Gemsafe libraries you should reinsert the CD or click on set.exe to start the installation again. When the anti virus program e.g. Kaspersky, advises you that Classic Client 32.msi is not being allowed to run and requests confirmation you should amend this recommendation to allow the program to run, for example with Kapersky you click on “yes allow program execution". You should repeat this action for eSignerv4 corp.msi.

What are trusted sites?
The Trusted Sites zone within the Internet Explorer Security settings is designed for content located on web sites that are considered more reputable or trustworthy than other sites on the internet. This means that a higher trust level can be assigned to these sites to limit the number of authentication requests.

Please refer to Microsoft Support for more information.

Why do I need to add the Barclays URLs to Trusted Sites?
Protected Mode was introduced for users of Internet Explorer 7, when used in conjunction with Windows Vista, as it was based on security features new to Windows Vista.

A security feature of Protect Mode is that it restricts ActiveX plugins, this is a blocking point for the Barclays eSigner security software as it utilises ActiveX plugins when loading the security certificates from the Gemalto plug and sign device.

Barclays URLs must be added to the Trusted Sites zone to allow eSigner to function correctly.

Adding Barclays URLs manually to Trusted Sites via TrustedSites.reg
If the Barclays installer does not add the Barclays URLs to the Trusted Sites zone then they can be added manually, either directly into the Windows Registry by running the TrustedSites.reg or via Internet Explorer.

Note: You must have user permission to be able to update the Windows Registry otherwise this can be done in Administrator mode. Please consult your local technical support for further advice.

Adding Barclays URLs manually to Trusted Sites via Internet Explorer
To add via Internet Explorer, access Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Security - select the Trusted Sites Icon then Sites. Enter the URL then select add and close.

The Barclays URLs are:

Barclays Internet Banking (BIB)
Barclays Wealth Online
BACS Payment Services
Barclays Global Trade Portal
Barclays Account Management Solution (AMS)
Barclays.Net

Why can I not see the Barclays URLs in Trusted Sites if added via TrustedSites.reg?
The Barclays URLs are installed to the Trusted Sites zone in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry so that the trusted sites are valid for all users on the PC not just the existing user.  Due to this change they will not be shown in the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer as this only displays URLs specific to the User.

Trusted Sites is shown to be working by a green tick at the bottom of the screen when entering a Barclays URL.
